Dr Sue Keay


Researcher focus

Dr Sue Keay has more than 20 years’ experience as a research professional leading multidisciplinary R&D programs to achieve impact, managing key relationships and transferring technology into industry.

She has experience in the resources sector as a researcher (earth sciences) working with mining companies (Energy Resources Australia & Rio Tinto) managing complex research projects in remote areas (Kakadu, NW Queensland) and overseas (Greece). Her work on collaborative projects with industry ranges across sectors from mining, manufacturing, engineering and professional services, technology and the environment.

Ten years of Sue’s experience has been with CRCs, with an executive role with the CAST CRC and playing a key role in the establishment of the Defence Materials Technology Centre (receiving an award for leadership). She has also held roles as a program manager (R&D) determining investments in water recycling research and has a range of commercial R&D experience with university commercialisation company UniQuest and as Director, UQ Business School Commercial. Sue’s roles have all involved acting as an advocate for researchers, supporting them from the initial stages of research through to managing research projects, facilitating connections with industry and government, and then converting research outcomes into technologies that can be sold, licensed or used.

Sue is currently the Chief Operations Officer for the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision based in Brisbane and as a Director on CRC ORE’s Board serves as Chair of the Centre-funded Project Committee, and a member of the IP Management and Commercialisation committee, and Implementation Council. She is a graduate and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and has formerly served as a Board Director for CAST Services (a technology services company spun out of the CAST CRC), Chair of CRC ORE’s IP Management and Commercialisation (IPMC) sub-committee, and a Member of the IP Management sub-committee reporting to the Board of the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence (AWRCoE).
